Once the weeds and moss are under control later in the spring, move over to just a lawn feed to keep the grass looking thick and green. Liquid lawn feeds via a hose end feeder are ideal for using in late spring into summer as they water the lawn as well in dry periods.
If the weather turns very hot, then the garden grass stops growing and will not use any feed. In addition to this, the lawn will start to get ‘stressed’ during prolonged dry spells, making them more susceptible to damage by lawn fertilisers. This will result in you having to take extra care of your garden lawn from that point on.
To summarise, steps to take for lawn feeding include:
Spring and summer lawn feeding
Additionally, some have moss control added for any moss present. It’s important to feed with a specific autumn lawn food such as Miracle-Gro EverGreen Autumn Lawn Care, to get the grass ready for the colder, wetter weather in winter and get the lawn ready for spring. Autumn lawn feeds will be low in nitrogen, as we don’t want to encourage any top growth, which can be soft and easily burnt by frost.
Whichever product you are using, always carefully read the label before use and apply according to the instructions.
For spring feeding, use a product containing feed, weed killers and moss control. This will quickly help the grass to start growing again and control any weeds that are present, plus kill off the moss that might have invaded the lawn over the winter.
Some lawn treatments just feed your garden lawn and are ideal if your lawn is weed and moss free, but others have added ingredients such as weed killers and/or moss killers. Furthermore, some are designed to use in the autumn to toughen up the grass ready for the winter and/or kill moss.
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
It’s a fundamental human need to feel as though you are contributing and growing- when we stop growing we tend to feel stuck, stagnant and depressed.
Tony Robbins talks about guarding your mind and being mindful of what you read, watch and do and whom you talk to. This may sound elitist but it also makes a lot of sense. It is important to surround yourself with people and experiences that nourish and nurture you. For me this is especially important when I’m feeling down or stressed- I have less inner resources to fend off negativity and can become easily overwhelmed by media, other people and experiences. I can easily lose my centre and sense of self and this can send my thoughts on a downward spiral.
So, just as you take care of your physical health and well-being it is also important to take care of your emotional and mental well-being.
Our thoughts are powerful; they shape our world and how we perceive our world. Filling your mind with negativity and information that doesn’t feed you and help you grow in a positive direction starts to have a detrimental impact on your life. Your perspective may become limited, judgemental and isolating- not much fun!
Now, start to feed the new seeds that you have planted. Surround yourself with books, teachers and people that nourish, challenge and nurture you. Listen to inspirational speakers or podcasts online, read about people you are inspired by and keep challenging yourself to try out new experiences. Try meditation, yoga, tai chi or another mindfulness practices and commit to staying with it.
Next, plant seeds that will nourish you and enable you to continue to grow in a positive direction. What are you curious about? What direction do you want your future to flourish in? It’s important to take charge of your life and make choices about how your future could look. Seeds may be courses, books, new ways of moving or eating and new ways of approaching your life and your situation.

When and How to Fertilize Established Lawns
To keep your existing lawn looking its best year-round, choose a fertilizer plan that meets its changing seasonal needs. At Pennington, we make it simple for northern and southern lawns. Just follow our four-part annual lawn fertilizer program:
Between August and November, grass slows down and prepares for the winter months. At the same time, broadleaf weeds start active growth again. With Pennington UltraGreen Winterizer Plus Weed & Feed Fertilizer 22-0-14, you can feed your northern or southern lawn nutrients essential to its winter prep and spring green-up — and kill broadleaf weeds. As a general rule, allow six to eight weeks between fertilizing and your first expected frost.
Timing is critical for this step. Make sure it’s applied before crabgrass seed germinates — that happens when soil temperatures reach 55 degrees Fahrenheit. For best results, apply with a spreader to actively growing turf and give your lawn at least .5 inch of water from rainfall or irrigation within 14 days.
