CBD in DIY Bath Products

By now, you’ve likely heard of CBD. Just a few years ago it was relatively unknown, but now it’s in everything from bath bombs to gummy bears. CBD is especially big here in the Pacific Northwest – you can find it at most grocery stores. Customers have been asking for the best way to use it in DIY bath and body, so we created 2 projects with CBD oil. Learn more below.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (also known as CBD) is a molecule found in cannabis and hemp plants. It’s commonly sold as an oil, tincture, in capsules, or as a spray. ONDA Wellness provides full-spectrum, whole-plant hemp CBD. They use biodynamic farming practices with minimal processing to deliver a vibrant green oil that’s great for all uses. Their hemp plants are infused with coconut and MCT oil, and their products can be consumed orally or used in skincare.

“The great thing about our CBD oils is that you can use it just about anywhere!” said Erin Willis, ONDA Wellness’ cannabis educator and content writer.

CBD doesn’t cause the same psychoactive effects as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another molecule in the cannabis plant.

“CBD products will not get you high,” said Christina with Purple Leaf Bath Bombs. She’s been making CBD-infused products for a little more than a year. “Hemp CBD contains zero THC. When looking for CBD products to buy, be sure the label says that the CBD is from the hemp plant.”

Why people use it

CBD is thought to have a variety of health benefits. It’s commonly used for anxiety, insomnia, inflammation, and chronic pain. Christina wants more people to try CBD and reduce the use of pharmaceutical drugs. She feels the hemp plant has amazing benefits and she’s trying to spread the word to her customers.

If you want to try CBD, Erin said there are a few factors to consider. Check to see if the plant is from the US, as regulations and quality systems are stabilizing here. ONDA uses a patented lipid-infusion method that doesn’t strip any part of the hemp.

“It’s important to find companies that are transparent with their infusion or extraction methods,” Erin said. “We personally like to steer clear of butane, CO2, or methane extractions.”

She also recommends researching the brand, specifically for third-party lab testing. That way you know the CBD is free from heavy metal or pesticides. ONDA has farmers test the hemp within 30 days of harvest to ensure it’s within the legal range allowed. That report is sent to the Department of Agriculture. Then, they test the biomass twice in their warehouse. Finally, the oil is tested one more time to ensure the proper dosage.

Selling CBD products

If you plan to sell CBD products, the FDA is still reviewing its regulatory authority. CBD is not approved by the FDA for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of any disease. They have approved a few CBD products, but they’ve also issued warning letters to companies claiming that it treats Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia.

Depending on where you live and the claims you’re making, it may not be legal to sell products made with CBD. This questions and answers page has more information.

Projects made with CBD

In DIY bath and body products, CBD oil can add soothing and moisturizing properties. It’s thought to be great for those with sensitive or extra dry skin. We partnered with ONDA Wellness for these projects.

“Like any high quality/high nutrient natural consumable product, less disruption and stripping of the plant’s ingredients is better for the body to consume,” Erin said.

We used the ONDA CBD in this bath bomb project. It’s a simple and natural recipe you’ll love. The CBD oil helps bind the bath bombs so they hold their shape, and it also moisturizes the skin as you soak. They’re scented with relaxing lavender 40/42 essential oil.

We also made this skin-loving CBD Body Balm Stick. It has ONDA CBD oil, mango butter, beeswax, and lavender 40/42 essential oil. It’s solid at room temperature and melts on contact with the skin. The salve is moisturizing and great for dry patches like elbows and hands.

Can You Use CBD Oil in Your Bath?

As people hear more anecdotal reports of the benefits of CBD, they want to know more about it. Cannabidiol (CBD) is showing promising benefits for supporting users’ well-being and promoting relief after physical activities.

Current treatments may not be producing the desired results, or the side effects could be too severe to continue. CBD offers an alternative way to support overall balance within the systems of the body.

As we face the current situation with Covid-19, it’s essential to find comfort and ways to help us de-stress. CBD oil is a superb choice to add to your bathwater for overall relief and comfort.

Help with Relaxation

When you lie in a warm bath, a process called vasodilation occurs. This function happens when the blood vessels in the body open wider, blood flows faster, and blood pressure decreases. The resulting decrease in blood pressure is already known to be beneficial for heart and stress relief. Although CBD oils already penetrate the skin quickly, vasodilation allows more rapid access to your system.

CBD oils can both be rubbed into your skin before your bath, or added to the bathwater. It’s already calming and soothing to climb into a warm bath, and so by adding CBD oil to your water, it may be that these effects are enhanced.

Many users report that CBD oils support a sense of relaxation. Body relaxation helps promote a feeling of calm, an excellent combination for de-stressing.

Perhaps you already use a bath bomb, or a blend of essential oils to help with relaxation. CBD bath bombs are another option, but CBD oil is an excellent choice as it can cover your whole body both before and during your bath.

How to Add CBD Oil to Your Bath

Using high-quality CBD oil, add 25-100 mg to your drawn, hot bathwater. Twenty-five milligrams can help support relaxation, while higher doses can aid in overall comfort and relief. Remain in the bath for a minimum of 15 minutes to experience the benefits of the CBD.

Alternatively, you can also use CBD bath salts which are easy to make at home. Simply mix together 3 cups of plain Epsom salts, 100-200 mg of CBD oil, and 10 drops of your favourite essential oil. Mix and allow to dry, and store in an airtight container. Use a heaping cupful in every bath.

How to Make a CBD Oil Bath Bomb

Use your full-spectrum hemp CBD oil to create a bath bomb to enhance your relaxation and wellness during your next bath night. Start with a plastic or metal bath bomb mould, or, if you don’t mind the shape, you can simply form it into a ball and place it into a container with a cover.

Ingredients:

  • 100-200 mg of CBD oil
  • 4 oz baking soda
  • 2 oz citric acid
  • 2 oz Epsom salt
  • 2 oz cornstarch
  • 1 tsp. water
  • 1 tsp. coconut oil
  • 5-10 drops of your favourite essential oil
  • 1-2 drops of food colouring (optional)

Directions:

Whisk all of the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Whisk until they are fully blended. Melt the coconut oil in the microwave for 30 seconds. Mix the wet ingredients into a smaller bowl. Slowly combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients to prevent foaming, whisking gently until the mixture is moist, but not too wet. If it is too dry, add water 1 teaspoon at a time.

Fill the mould on the top and bottom and press the two halves together. Take the top part of the mould off, and leave the bomb to dry for an hour in the bottom part of the mould. Remove the entire mixture from the mould to dry overnight, and your CBD-infused bath bomb is ready to use.

Add CBD oil to bath water or rub directly into the skin.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD is hemp-derived. Hemp is a close cousin of cannabis and a member of the cannabis sativa plant species. It contains trace amounts of the psychoactive THC, so you cannot get high from full spectrum CBD.

Many researchers believe CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), and in particular, the CB1 and CB2 receptors. There is a high density of these receptors in the skin and part of their job is to promote a healthy balance throughout your body.

As the skin is the largest organ in the body, by adding CBD oil to the bathwater, you are allowing the CBD hemp extract to reach these receptors quickly. You may find CBD helps you to relax, soothes your skin and muscles, and generally contributes to an enhanced feeling of well-being.
